Serving sex workers and survivors.

At New Moon, our three areas of work are philanthropic education, moving money into movement, and capacity building.

As an intermediary fund, we exist to bridge the funding gaps between philanthropy and grassroots organizations serving people in the sex trade. Less than 1% of foundation funding globally goes to sex worker-led initiatives, yet sex workers exist at the crux of every social justice movement.

We act as a conduit between donors and doers by helping philanthropists make sense of a complex and deeply intersectional issue. We fortify grassroots leaders and groups with funding and capacity building support.

All of our programs are designed and implemented by people with lived experience in the sex trade. We strengthen networks of grassroots advocates and uplift opportunities poised for impact to foundations and philanthropists working to advance gender justice, racial justice, disability justice, reproductive rights, and multiracial democracy.

Philanthropic Education

Through nuanced conversations ranging from bodily autonomy to violence prevention, we inspire donors to learn, engage, and bring their resources and connections to the movement for sex workers’ rights. We meet donors where they’re at and guide them on their journey in learning about effective anti-trafficking efforts, and the inherent intersectionality of sex trade related issues.

We do this by:

  • Curating and presenting information to donor networks.

  • Offering philanthropic advising services and consultations to individuals, foundations, PSO’s, and corporations.

  • Contributing to the Sex Work Donor Collaborative.

  • Contributing grant data to FCAA and HRFN.

  • Organizing donors to invest in solutions poised for impact

Examples of our public work:

In less than one year, New Moon brokered financial investments into grassroots organizations exceeding $1,200,000. Through our regranting program, New Moon Fund, we disburse financial resources and identify projects ripe for deeper investment.

We do this by:

  • Regranting through New Moon Fund.

  • Offering 0% interest loans to grantee partners in need of gap funding to access reimbursement-based government grants.

  • Mobilizing donors in traditional philanthropy and grassroots networks of support.

  • Fundraising for specific issue areas within sex workers rights, such as HIV/AIDS response and reproductive justice advocacy.

Moving Money into Movement

Support for New Moon Fund:

New Moon Funding Recipients:

As of Q1 2024, New Moon has provided funding for 50+ sex worker and survivor led organizations, representing nearly 1/4 of the movement in the US. Below is a list of some of our funding recipients:

New Moon is grateful to be a recipient of the Matching Program to Unlock Giving to Expand Women’s Power & Influence.

New Moon is also supported by… Mama Cash, Vital Projects, Sex Work Rights, and the Abortion Bridge Collaborative Fund at Women Donors Network. We couldn’t do this work without the support of private family foundations and individual supporters who wish to remain anonymous. For each of these families and individuals, we are immensely thankful.

Capacity Building

Bringing cohesion to advocacy and direct services networks.

We recognize it’s going to take more than money to advance rights for people in the sex trade. New Moon consults with community partners to identify needs to advance collective goals, and works with donors to fill those gaps.

We build & launch pilot programs that are broadly useful to our movement, such as:

  • Spokes Hub - A free online leadership academy for advocates with lived experience in the sex trade.

  • AAIR Directory - An online library of resources and listing relevant to sex trade advocacy.

  • Cohort Training: Engaging District Attorney’s to Implement Non-Prosecutorial Policies.

  • We offer the following types of pro-bono technical assistance to individuals and grassroots organizations:

    • Grant writing & budgeting.

    • Fiscal sponsorship and non-profit formation.

    • Strategy, timelines, and coalition building.

    • Crisis management.

Beyond pilot programming and technical assistance, we act as thought partners to local and national organizations led by people with lived experience in the sex trade. We recognize leadership by offering our tangible and emotional support, listening for ways that New Moon can be of service. Offer funding on a per-case basis to pay for regional coordination efforts, conference attendance, technology needs, professional services, and other one-off expenses that make a meaningful difference in an organization’s ability to succeed.
